How to Get Your Small Business to Show Up on Google: A Beginner’s Guide

A simple, practical guide for South African small businesses: how to appear on Google search and Google Maps, step by step, without jargon.

When customers need a plumber, a salon or an accountant, most of them start with a Google search. Showing up in those results is one of the most valuable things you can do for your business. Here’s how to get started, in plain language.

1. Set up your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile is the box that appears on Google Maps and on the right of search results. It’s free and often the first thing people see for “near me” searches. Add your services, hours, photos and contact details, and keep them up to date. Our Google Business Profile guide walks you through it.

2. Have a proper website

A Facebook page helps, but a website gives Google much more to understand about your business: what you do, where you work and why people should choose you. It also gives your Google profile somewhere to send people. See why a Facebook page isn’t enough.

3. Use the words your customers use

Think about what a customer would actually type: “geyser repairs Randburg” or “braids salon Soweto”. Make sure those words appear naturally on your website, especially in page titles and headings.

4. Name the areas you serve

Google tries to show local results. Listing the suburbs and towns you work in helps you appear for searches in those areas.

5. Give each main service its own page

A single page that lists everything is harder to rank than separate pages for each main service. If you offer geyser installations, leak detection and bathroom renovations, each deserves its own page.

6. Collect reviews

Reviews on your Google profile build trust and help your visibility. Ask happy customers directly, and make it easy with a link. Read how to get more Google reviews.

7. Make sure your site works well on phones

Most local searches happen on phones. A slow or awkward mobile site loses customers and can hold back your rankings.

8. Be consistent everywhere

Use exactly the same business name, phone number and address on your website, Google profile, Facebook and directory listings.

How long does it take?

Be patient. New websites usually take weeks to months to build visibility, and nobody can honestly guarantee a position on Google. Doing the basics well, consistently, is what works.
