Do I Need a Website If I Already Have a Facebook Page?

Facebook and Instagram are great for reaching people, but relying on them alone can cost you customers. Here is why a website still matters.

Plenty of small businesses in South Africa run entirely from a Facebook page, an Instagram account or a WhatsApp number. It is free, it is easy, and your customers are already there. So do you really need a website as well?

For most businesses, the answer is yes. Social media and a website do different jobs, and they work best together.

1. You do not own your social media page

Your Facebook page lives on someone else’s platform. If your account gets hacked, restricted or shut down, or if the platform changes how it shows your posts, you can lose access to your audience overnight. A website is yours. It stays put, no matter what happens on social media.

2. People search Google, not Facebook

When someone needs a plumber, a caterer or a hair salon, they usually start with Google. A website gives you a much better chance of showing up in those searches, especially when combined with a Google Business Profile. A Facebook page alone often does not appear for the searches that matter.

3. A website builds trust

Many customers check for a website before they buy, especially for bigger purchases or services. A professional site with your services, prices, contact details and reviews tells people you are a real, established business. Without one, some potential customers will simply choose a competitor who has one.

4. You control the message

On social media, your posts compete with ads, memes and your competitors, and older posts quickly disappear down the feed. On your website, you decide what visitors see first: your best work, your offer, and a clear way to contact you or buy.

5. Your ads work better

If you run Facebook or Google ads, sending people to a proper website gives you somewhere to explain your offer, collect enquiries and track results. That makes your ad spend go further.

6. It works while you sleep

A website answers common questions, shows your prices and takes enquiries or orders around the clock, without you replying to every message by hand.

Social media and a website work best together

This is not about abandoning Facebook or Instagram. Social media is great for reaching new people and staying in touch with customers. Your website is the home base you send them to, where they can learn more, trust you and take action.
