How Long Does It Take to Build a Website? The Process Explained

How long a website takes depends on its size and one thing most business owners do not expect. Here is the process, step by step.

If you are planning a new website, you probably want to know when it will be ready. The honest answer: it depends on how big the site is, and on how quickly the content comes together. Here is what the process usually looks like, and how to keep it moving.

Typical timeframes

For small business websites, timeframes usually depend on the number of pages and features:

  • A one-page site: a few days
  • A small site with a few pages: around a week
  • A larger site with many pages: one to two weeks or more
  • An online store: usually the longest, because of products, payments and shipping setup

At Wonder Studio, for example, our turnaround ranges from 2 to 3 business days for a Starter site up to 10 to 14 business days for a full online store.

The website process, step by step

1. Planning and information

First, your designer needs to understand your business: what you offer, who your customers are, what you want visitors to do, and the look you like. This is often done through a short questionnaire or a call.

2. Design concept

Next comes a first design, often of the home page, so you can see the look and feel before the full site is built. This is the best time to give feedback, because changing direction now is quick and easy.

3. Building the site

Once the design is approved, the full website is built: all the pages, content, contact forms, mobile layout and any features like online payments or bookings.

4. Review and changes

You review the finished site and request any changes. Most providers include a set number of revision rounds, so it helps to gather all your feedback together rather than sending it in bits.

5. Launch

Your domain is connected, final checks are done, and your website goes live.

The biggest cause of delays

In most projects, the thing that slows things down is not the design or the building. It is waiting for content: the text, photos, logo, prices and details that go on the site. Many providers, including us, start the clock only once all the content has been received.

How to get your website live faster

  • Gather your content early: photos of your work, your logo, service descriptions, prices and contact details.
  • Find examples you like: a few websites whose style you admire help your designer get it right first time.
  • Give clear, combined feedback: one organised list of changes is faster than many separate messages.
  • Reply promptly: quick answers keep the project moving.
